What is NaviLens

Video: What is NaviLens?

Video with ASL below

NaviLens is an advanced wayfinding and accessibility technology designed to assist blind and visually impaired people in navigating public spaces, transportation systems, and product packaging. It uses high-contrast, colorful codes that function similarly to QR codes but can be detected from a distance and at an angle—without requiring precise aiming.

NaviLens codes can also be used with the NaviLens GO app by people with normal or low vision in transit, museums, schools, businesses, etc.

In short, NaviLens can make the world more accessible to everyone. By everyone, I mean:

  1. Blind, low vision, and DeafBlind individuals

  2. Deaf and hard of hearing sign language users

  3. Wheelchair users and people who use mobility aids

  4. People with normal or low vision

  5. People who speak any of 37 languages

How Does NaviLens Work?

  1. NaviLens codes are placed in locations such as subway stations, museums, bus stops, and product packaging.

  2. Users scan the codes with the NaviLens app or the NaviLens GO app (available on iOS & Android).

  3. The app instantly speaks the information stored in the code, such as directions, schedules, or product details.

  4. The app can detect codes from several meters away (up to 12 meters/40 feet) and while in motion.

Where is NaviLens Used?

  1. Public Transit: Metro systems in New York City, London, Barcelona, Madrid, Sydney, and more.

  2. Museums & Public Spaces: Used in places like the History Museum on the Square (Missouri) and various public buildings.

  3. Retail & Packaging: Companies like Kellogg’s have added NaviLens codes to cereal boxes for accessible product information.

  4. See the NaviLens - Worldwide Locations Map on this blog.

Key Benefits of NaviLens:

  1. No need to focus the camera – codes are detected even when blurry.

  2. Works from far away – up to 12 meters (40 feet).

  3. Multilingual support – reads information in the user’s preferred language.

  4. Improves independence for blind and visually impaired users.

  5. Sighted people can use NaviLens GO to access multimedia content including sign language videos, content for kids, etc.
